10 Ways to Create Geometric Patterns with Ceramic Tile

10 Ways to Create Geometric Patterns with Ceramic Tile

Say goodbye to white subway and hello to bold geometric tile patterns! Modern, patterned tile is quickly becoming a staple for the home. We love seeing clients embrace unique and inspiring tile compositions. While patterned tile is typically associated with cement tile, we like this design movement because it aligns with our passion for handmade ceramic tile. It's what we do all day, every day. Creating patterns is at the heart of what we're all about. Here are 10 ways that we've created geometric bliss with patterned tiles.

1. Moroccan Fish Scales Mosaic - Wave Pattern

This global-inspired tile pattern looks more complex than it is. It's a Mercury Mosaics' standard tile (meaning it is ordered on mesh sheets with no customization needed) oriented slightly differently than our Moroccan Fish Scales. The mesmerizing geometric tile pattern tricks your eye into creating multiple shapes if you stare at it long enough.

2. Go Big with Custom Design

One of the things that separates us from the rest: we adore creating custom designs. We're an artist-run, woman-owned operation and if we do say so ourselves, we're pretty good at it! To establish a pattern, sometimes you need the entire wall for your canvas. Having a large-scale kitchen backsplash or statement wall is a beautiful way to let our tile stand out in your home, creating an unforgettable interior. Can't get enough of this one? Neither can we, read more about it on this past blog.

3. Modern Scandinavian Diamonds - Star Pattern

This is the perfect geometric tile pattern of modern mosaic tile for Mid-Century Modern interiors. Just like a starry night, you won't be able to stop gazing at your artisan-crafted tile wall. Our Diamonds can be purchased in a repeating star pattern at no additional cost, meaning you get a custom look without breaking the bank. Contact our sales team directly for this one.

4. High Variation Glaze

Moroccan Cross is an excellent choice if you're going for a traditional patterned vibe. Interesting in their own right, they look stunning with a high variation glaze on top. This technique creates an organic and subtle geometric pattern tile from the handmade process and the brush strokes of the Tile Elf's hand. Intrigued by our glazes? Check out this fascinating blog about our tile colors - AKA glazes.

5. Bold Colors

Accentuate the shapes of your pattern by using bold colors. Whether you want a specific pattern or something with unique color placement, we can make it happen! This modern concept will quickly make the tile the focal point for the room. Shape the rest of your interior around your modern patterned tile and all other design elements will simply fall into place.

6. Mixing Shapes

Show that you're savvy with your geometric tile design skills with this sophisticated but simple technique. Mixing tile shapes gives you an opportunity to create a pattern without having multiple glaze colors. We can mix a variety of shapes - just reach out and ask us how! We love having a simple subway backsplash with a contrasting line of shapes for an easy way to customize.

7. Ombre

We've been fans of ombre in tile for quite a bit of time now. A beautiful way to let the tile shape transform throughout one installation, we've also heard it called a gradation in color. However you slice it, it's a great way to express something different that will shine as a work of art.  For this idea, put special attention to the grout color, considering how the glazes will pop depending on the lightness or darkness. Details make the design and with this one, we go over grout color and the role it plays in this blog here

If you need some inspiration, no better place to look than the patterned past! Go back to the times of layered, bold pattern, and make a style statement. This backsplash was inspired by a painting that our client's father made back in the 60's.

Love your aesthetic!! Do you have any pics of triangular shapes such as a pyramid instead of the square? Would love to see that and consider for our new build. Thanks!
