Tile Trend Alert: Dark and Moody Interiors

Tile Trend Alert: Dark and Moody Interiors

The dark and moody interior trend has taken over in social media. Dark Academia decor is all about romanticizing bold colors, incorporating ornamental elements, and adding texture and pattern to create a dynamic look. This maximalist trend is also about going bold so we put together a list of 7 bold dark and moody tiled interiors to inspire your Dark Academia side…

1. Onyx Blend Backsplash

If there's one tile blend that falls into the category of this ever so popular Goth-assaince trend, it's our Onyx Blend. This movement tends to romanticize dark colors, texture and pattern while honoring ornamental dark decor from centerpieces to knick knacks. This dramatic tiled home bar checks all the boxes. We love the richness of the two glaze colors and two finishes. Plus, the unique layout of Herringbone verse stacked Subway Tile adds a depth that definitely follows this dark and moody aesthetic.

2. Old English Tiled Bar

Another moody bar that we had to add the list was this Cabinetry Refined hutch. Although this bar backsplash doesn't check the "paint it black" box, the homeowners inspiration was an Old English basement pub so it fits with the Dark Academia trend perfectly. The classic architecture, warmth of the dark wood paired with the vibrant green of our Sea Mist glaze automatically turns this space into a dreamy dark parlour.

3. Cozy & Cool Tiled Bathroom

One thing that we love about this moody aestheic is the brilliant use of trinkets. From matte black fixtures, to antique brass candlesticks and mysterious taxidermy, there’s a place for your beloved decor in Dark Academia. We adore this Faux Martha designed bathroom because it combines this trendy style with a cozy cabin feel. Our Large Craftsman Squares in our Satin Black turn this space into the perfect mixture of edginess and comfort.

4. Moody yet Modern Kitchen Backsplash

Although this gorgeously bold kitchen backsplash doesn't quite follow the guidelines of Dark Academia, we felt we'd be doing this dark and moody blog a disservice not to include it. It's one of the most unique Diamond river backsplashes we've seen yet. The brilliant Diamond backsplash offers a modern and sleek sophistication to a custom project with personality. It shows that you can go all out with bold neutral colors while maintaining a timeless look.

5. Bold London Patterned Floor

Another layer of this dark and moody interior trend is.. layers! What we mean by layering with tile is creating multi-dimensional spaces by using different patterns, shapes, colors, and textures. This particular project is the Crème de la Crème of layering with tile. The bold Bluegrass Subway Tile stacked against our vintage inspired London Pattern makes this project the perfect option for a dramatic parlour bathroom.

6. Dramatic Matte Backsplash

Matte black is back! In fact, it's been trending on Pinterest for months now and TikTok is booming with Gothic kitchen decor. From black matte fixtures, to wall color, to tile finish, we are seeing this moody movement pop up everywhere. Not ready to fully commit to the "paint it black" trend? No worries! One of our favorite ways to accent all your matte black surroundings is with a pop of colorful tile. Take a tip from this beautifully edgy hair salon in Northeast Minneapolis!

7. Matte Black Commercial Bar

It's no surprise that this gorgeous bar backsplash is home to the amazing Studio Grey design studio. The matte black surround with gold fixtures and under-lit floating shelves make this kitchen look like it's straight out of an Old Hollywood movie. Plus, we love how they opted to stack the Subway Tile in a vertical orientation. So sleek!
