For this blog we took a trip to Northern Coffeeworks which (lucky for us) is in our backyard in Minneapolis, MN. We created a tile statement wall that acts as a bar backsplash for the baristas working away at their espresso creations. Reminiscent of a modern northern-lake scene, the red, green, and blue tile reminds coffee drinkers of the natural beauty in their home state.
Founder of Northern Coffeeworks, Joshua Klauck, set out to create a coffee shop with quality espresso that reflected the culture and community of Minneapolis. He wanted to communicate that the space and offerings of the shop were more than another stark white subway tile cafe. Knowing his inspiration, his artist friend Annie Hejny, a neighbor from our old space in the Casket Arts building, told him about Mercury Mosaics.
Abstracting a concept into tile art is what our custom design is all about, and we love to do it. For this project we tried to evoke a geometric representation of Northern Minnesota, giving customers a sense of pride for the community they live in. Northern Coffeeworks wanted to make sure that their mission transcended into the entire interior design and customer experience.
With a clear idea and inspiration our designers got to work mocking up the wall. This project used 11 different glaze colors! We encourage our clients to use as many colors as they'd like in their projects as we have over 100 glazes to pick from. This color variety helped depict the beautiful range of colors that there are in nature.
The Final Tile Installation:
The final tile statement wall is stunning - it draws your eye into the shop from the front windows. While the colors have a primary pop, the glaze variations keep it looking sophisticated, minimal, and contemporary. This was the perfect project to celebrate #theboldnorth pride that we have for our studio's home in Minneapolis, MN.
