Inspired by the artistic detail of a lake’s underwater depths that is represented in a bathymetric map, we had the unique opportunity to create a custom large 13’x10′ White Bear Lake mosaic. An epic color selection of twenty six shades of blues and greens in our Bubbles tile were carefully selected to represent the various depths of this Minnesota lake. 3″x12″ Subway Tile in 913 Old Copper surrounds the mosaic; the high variation of this glaze color creates a dynamic backdrop. The installation of this piece is located off the boardwalk of the Boatworks Commons on White Bear Lake. This is one mosaic piece that is truly lovely to see in person, so if you find yourself in the area, be sure to check it out! Needless to say, this was an awe-inspiring project that we had so much fun working on. Here is a gallery of photos and a behind the scene look at the design process.
White Bear Lake is an adorable and quaint suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota full of character and coastal charm. The Boatworks Commons is a luxury lakeside living community on the shores of White Bear Lake. This is absolutely worth a trip to see, especially on a warm day full of sunshine! Grab some ice cream, walk around the lakeside, and stop into the public restroom space to see the new landmark of the White Bear Lake tile mosaic.
Each Bubble tile was created by hand by our skilled studio artists and laid out to perfection within each color grouping. This includes the tiny Bubbles and the Bubble ring sets! The fade from dark to light creates the illusion of depth, similar to a bathymetric map of the lake! A range of blue and green glazes were the perfect palette for the look and feel of the area.
Notice the little red Bubble tile? This little circular tile shows “You are here!” in a subtle way that blends well with the overall design of the mosaic.
The Bubble Pierced Subway Tile is in the 3″x12″ size and is the 913 Old Copper glaze. This glaze in particular has a high range of variation which creates a beautiful dimension of depth and character. Yep, that’s right—only one glaze was used for the Subway Tile! The end result? Gorgeous blues and greens that blend together and provide a cohesive backdrop for the mosaic lake to take the stage.
A sneak peak behind the design! We love paying attention to the little details, and we don’t just throw tile together to make the end result. From the beginning of the design process, colors are chosen and refined until the perfect color palette is created. Once the tile shape has been determined as well, the design is created on the computer with tiles exactly to scale in the space.
