What Is Mesh-Mounted Tile? A Simple Guide to Faster, Easier Tile Installation

When it comes to tile installation—whether you're a seasoned pro or diving into your first DIY project—the way your tile is prepped can make all the difference. At Mercury Mosaics, we’re big believers in making things easier without compromising on beauty. That’s where mesh-mounted (also known as sheeted) tile comes in.

Let’s break down what it is, why we use it, and how it can make your next tile project smoother and more stunning.

What Are Mesh-Mounted (Sheeted) Tiles?

Mesh-mounted tiles are individual handmade tiles that are glued to a mesh backing to create sheets—typically around 1 square foot each. These sheets interlock like puzzle pieces, making them super easy to work with during installation.

Here at Mercury Mosaics, we sheet nearly all of our tile designs, whether you're ordering from our standard website collections or collaborating with our design team on a custom masterpiece. The only exception? Our Subway Singles, which are meant to be laid individually—see the chart below for details.

So, whether you're eyeing a signature shape in one of our many glazes or building out a custom ombré design, chances are it's coming to you mesh-mounted and ready to install.

Why Use Mesh Sheets?

The biggest benefit? Ease and speed.

Instead of painstakingly setting individual tiles one by one, mesh-mounted sheets allow you to install multiple pieces at once—perfectly spaced and pre-aligned. That means less time on your knees and more time enjoying your beautiful new backsplash, shower wall, or floor. To sum it up here’s why mesh-mounted tile is a favorite of both first-timers and design pros:

  • Faster installation
  • Cleaner grout lines
  • Easier layout & alignment
  • Perfect for standard & complex designs
  • Less waste & more accuracy

Mesh-mounted tiles also help ensure consistent grout lines and a seamless finish, especially important for patterns like our Diamonds, Hexagons, and Moroccan Fish Scales. It takes the guesswork out of layout and spacing—something both homeowners and installers love.

Why They're Great for Custom Designs

Dreaming up something more unique? Maybe a River Ombre, a Color Gradient, a Live Edge edge treatment, or even a fully custom tile mural? That’s where mesh-mounted sheets really shine.

For these more intricate designs, our team will:

  • Print a full-scale template of your installation area
  • Handplace each tile on mesh to match the layout
  • Cut and number the sheets for easy reference during install

This extra step means your design will arrive ready to install with as little guesswork as possible, keeping even the most complex layouts looking flawless.

Tips for Installation

Even though our mesh-mounted sheets make the process easier, a few tips can ensure a smooth install:

  • Prepare your surface: Make sure it’s flat, clean, and dry.
  • Use the right adhesive: Talk to your tile setter or hardware store about the best thinset or mortar for ceramic mosaic tiles.
  • Plan your layout: Dry-fit the sheets beforehand to get a feel for the flow and spacing.
  • Watch the spacing: Don’t press too hard—this can squeeze adhesive between the tiles and make grouting tricky.
  • Use spacers as needed: While our mesh helps keep spacing consistent, spacers may help align tricky areas.

And if you’re working with one of our high-custom designs, don’t worry—we’ll send clear install maps and instructions with your order.

So whether you're refreshing your kitchen backsplash or dreaming up a full-wall tile moment, mesh-mounted tile sheets help turn vision into reality—beautifully and efficiently. Want help deciding on the best design or glaze for your project? Our design team is just a message away!
