Turning mountains into tile… there are so many great ways to draw inspiration from nature and activate your inspiration into a tile project! Here is a recent shower wall renovation we created tile for that is a great example of how to use inspiration from your favorite scenic spots and transform it into tile!
Where do you find inspiration?
These homeowners were inspired by a mountain lake view that is one of their favorite outdoor views. Who wouldn’t be inspired by a view as gorgeous as this! We drew from the stone colors of the mountains, the greens of the trees, and reflective blue-green colors of the lake.
See the colors pulled from this gorgeous view below!
32 Canton Jade, 133R Sea Green, 133E Sea Green, 108 China Sea, 131R Turtle Shell, 1016 Costa Rica
Can I use my inspiration for a tile project?
The answer you were hoping for is yes! From this color palette we pulled from the landscape, we created a blend of earthy blues and green glazes for a Moroccan Fish Scales shower!
Large Moroccan Fish Scales – 131R Turtle Shell, 108 China Sea, 1016 Costa Rica, 133R Sea Green, 133E Sea Green, 32 Canton Jade
The glazes are a combination of muted blues and greens to pull from the color palette of the scenic view without being a literal representation of the mountain reflection! The great thing about some of these glazes are a light green color on a red clay body. (Read our Glaze 101 blog to learn more of what this means!) This allows the natural color of the clay to come through and shows a wide variety of color in earthy tones! This is a similar effect to seeing stones through the transparency of the lake water.
For the complete look, we included our 4″x8″ Subway Tile for the main shower walls in addition to the Large Moroccan Fish Scales for a feature wall open to the main space of the bathroom. The two shapes contrast each other, one creates width in an otherwise awkward space while the other pulls in the element of the sea our clients are so fond of. Each day begins in the bathroom – this spa-like getaway now pays daily homage to a favorite getaway.
4″x8″ Subway Tiles – 216 Sea Glass
The handmade quality and natural variation of each piece of tile adds to the nature inspired design. Sometimes deeper tones can have a tendency to create a dark space, to avoid an overly dark look – 4″x8″ Subway Tiles in 216 Sea Glass were used on the adjacent wall to lighten up the space. Using more than one tile shape for a shower can also help to keep your space from feeling enclosed. We can only image how wonderful it feels to start the day in this gorgeous bathroom. The colors are enough to make you feel like you have your very own private hot spring right in your home!
Keep it simple
There’s no need to overthink it! What vacations or destinations are you already inspired by? What photos make you swoon on instagram? Chances are you could think of at least three photos that you’ve already seen that could easily be drawn from to create some gorgeous handmade tile!
