What is maximalism?
Maximalism is centered around the idea that more is more. A direct reaction to minimalism, this concept is for anyone that thinks less is a bore. Characterized by layers of texture, pattern, and bold color, this style is all about having fun.
What does maximalism in tile look like?
Maximalism in tile means expressing your personality through color and shape. The tile should make people walk into your space and say, “this is so you.” It will include unique combinations with plenty of color and playful shapes. We hope these maximalist tile concepts help you find a way to spice up your next home project with something a little different.
Here are some fun maximalist tile concepts to try:
Know no borders.
Break up shapes or the border of your entire installation with Bubbles! This stunning concept is for those people who like to draw outside of the lines. It’s a tile technique that we play with quite often at Mercury Mosaics, and for good reason. The contrast between breaking up perfectly geometric tile with organic bubbles is beautiful. This tile idea is fun because each installation is unique and one-of-a-kind.

Turn tile into wall art.
Leave a mark of personality in your space with a statement wall of tile. For Chowgirl’s headquarters we created an organic hexagon installation with screen-printed bees on it. This tile wall art piece is the perfect reflection and inspiration for an office filled with an awesome team of worker bees.

Use bold color.
Maximalism is all about being bright and bold! Our favorite glazes that we offer for this tile design concept includes punchy teals and blazing oranges. We have over 100 colors to pick from and as far as choosing goes, Maximalism says, “the more the merrier!”

Create a custom mosaic.
Did you know that Mercury Mosaics started as a custom mosaic company? In the past 16 years we have created custom mosaics in a variety of styles – large and small. If you can dream it, we can make it!
Lululemon Mall of America – Custom colors.
Play with texture.
Don’t let your tile go flat – bring some texture to it! Textured tile adds character and creates interesting color variation in the glaze. We have 12 different textures that you can choose from to take your tile to the next level.

Combine multiple shapes.
There’s no need to stick to one shape with us. Our talented Tile Elves will lay out multiple shapes of tile together on a mesh back for an easy install of an intricate pattern. Having multiple shapes creates interesting designs within the overall tile design concept, get lost in the maze of tile!
Large Hexagon – 60 Silver Lining Subway Tile – 39 London Fog
Go Retro.
Not sure where to go when the choices are endless? We love time traveling to the 50s-70s for interior color inspiration. They sure knew how to layer on the color and tile design concept back then.
