The hexagon is known throughout nature as the most mathematically perfect shape because of how little waste is left behind when the shape is lined together. This belief was first theorized way back in 36 B.C. by Marcus Terentius Varro when he coined the phrase, “The Honeycomb Conjecture”, and later proven by mathematician Thomas C. Hales in 1999. Obviously, bees are the original designers of this shape, and their influence is still utilized by artists and designers all over the world today. Here at Mercury Mosaics, we couldn’t agree more that this mathematically and aesthetically pleasing form is a true classic that will continue its reign of perfection for the rest of time.
1. Classic Hexagon
Charles Darwin called the Hexagon, “…absolutely perfect in economizing labor and wax”, in regard to bees choosing the shape for their honey-making. This shape is not only appreciated by its efficiency in nature, but by its elegant beauty used across artistic mediums. Here we chose our jewel-toned glaze, 65 Amber, to achieve this classic honeycomb look. The high variation of the glaze gives a natural, if not rustic feel to the design. If you are looking to bring a bit of the “outside in”, look no further than this warm color and graceful design.
2. Moody Blues
In contrast, this porch floor installation offers a cool take on the classic Hexagon shape. The pops of 18 Bright Blue amongst the sea of 61 Navy on our Large Hexagon tiles creates a custom look without being over designed. The white walls blended with the dark blue gives off a nautical feel, and how cute is the porch swing?!

3. Floral Inspiration
Another way to honor the natural beauty of the Hexagon shape is with our Small Hexagon Flower Pattern sheets. This retro look utilizes color and placement to create a one-of-a-kind design, and we even offer it in easy-to-install sheets on our website. So if you’re looking to add a bit of flair to your home, while keeping it classy, these floral-inspired sheets are the answer to your tile dreams.

4. Tile Everywhere
Most often we work with clients to design their backsplash or bathroom floor. This client wanted to take it one step further and cover their entire shower with our Large Hexagon tile! Our 1036W Bluegrass glaze was chosen to create a lush and vibrant feel for this genie-in-a-bottle design. This tile was also expertly installed to achieve this polished look. Notice the continuation of the Large Hexagons up the walls from the floor and onto the ceiling. Never underestimate the benefits of hiring an experienced installer- it can make all of the difference in the world.

5. Ombre
Ombre, which literally means “shaded” in French, is the blending of one color to another, usually moving across a scale from light to dark. Here we not only utilize that color theory but have also combined our Medium Diamonds with our Large Hexagon shapes to add dimension to this design. Using these cool grey and white tones offers a trendy take on a neutral palette. Just imagine the possibilities of adding an ombre effect to your tile design.

6. Go Small, Think Big
Our Small Hexagons should not go unnoticed when discussing the possibilities with our Hexagon tile. These little cuties offer a compact look with a big design feel. Again, we see our 1036W Bluegrass glaze looking vibrant, yet timeless on this bathroom floor. The gold fixtures add a graceful accent, while the white tiled walls and tub let the dark teal tile be the star of the show.
