Mesh Sheets: The Answer to your Install Questions

Mesh Sheets: The Answer to your Install Questions

Hi there, my name is Maggie and I've worked at Mercury Mosaics for almost 11 years! I started out as a tile maker and worked my way through the studio glazing, loading tile into kilns, shipping, and laying out everything from fish scales to mosaics. If there's one thing I know about the world of tile is that it can be a totally complicated and mystical place. Luckily, our mesh-mounting process makes it super easy to understand all the nitty gritty details of laying out handmade tile... Read on to find out more about mesh sheets: the answer to your install questions!

1. Standard Bohemian Backsplash

Mandy and Kevin of 188 sqft decided to take their RV to the next level and add a touch of personality to their kitchen with our handmade tile. They decided to go with one of our most popular standard tiles, Small Hexagons in 1036W Bluegrass.

When ordering standard tile, you have two options. As mentioned above, you can either choose to have your tile mesh-mounted or loose. We always recommend mesh-mounting because it will save your installer the headache of installing tile piece by piece. In Mandy and Kevin's case, they received 18 easy to install sheets rather than 432 pieces of loose tile. The sheets that we make are also interlocking, meaning they fit together with every other sheet, whether they’re being connected on the right, left, top, or bottom sides. The goal is to have uniform grout lines that make every tile look like it was custom fit for your space

As seen by the progression below, first we glue pieces of tile to approx. 1 sq ft of mesh. We go through this process until we've reached the amount of square feet needed for your project. Next, we carefully pack them and ship them right to your front door!

2. Standard Custom Flower Floor

We've been hard at work trying to standardize some of our more popular patterns. This way, you get the best of both worlds: a custom looking design at the standard cost. This flower patterned floor for Pencil Shavings Studio checks all the right boxes.

If you're wondering if your design can be made into standard sheets, a good general rule of thumb is to ask yourself if your design  can be repeated. If yes, it's standard; If not, it's custom. If you're unsure, just ask!

The layout process for our standard custom patterns is the same as our standard sheets. First, we glue tile onto approx. 1 square foot of mesh and repeat this until we reach the square footage needed for your project.

3. Custom Bubbly Backsplash

Recently, we've been all about mixing tile shapes together to create eye-catching custom designs. For this Cocoon Salon project we created a horizontal wave of Bubbles by organically merging the shapes with 3″ x 8″ Subway Tile

If you want a custom work of art for your home or business, no problem! We can create custom mesh mount mosaics to fit perfectly in your space. We do this by printing a life-size template of your space with the specified tile drawn right on it. The layout artist then glues down your custom mosaic to giant sheets of mesh based on color previews created by our design team.

After the glue has dried, our shipping team cuts down the mosaic into manageable sheets and numbers them so we can create an easy-to-follow map for the installer. The installer then unpacks the sheets and follows the map to piece together your custom work of art.
