How to Choose the Right Tile Type

How to Choose the Right Tile Type

We know the feeling. Swooning over a tile installation, feeling ready to take on your own project, to being completely overwhelmed by all of the options. But have no fear! We promise in the end, you'll be happy that you had so many choices because that means that your dream tile installation is possible for your home. Plus, we're here to help you navigate the beautiful world of tile!

There are four main elements to consider when choosing the right tile type for your project: Material, Size, Shape, and Color.

1. Material

First things first, there are different types of tile materials out there: glass, porcelain, cement, and marble, to name a few. All of our tile is ceramic, but we have different clay bodies to suit your particular project. We use ceramic tile because it's durable, easy-to-clean, and perfect for our signature artisan hand-made look. It really works for almost any project - from high-traffic floors, statement walls, and backsplashes. All of our clay bodies are suitable for indoor projects and we have a special clay body for outdoor tile projects.

2. Shape

We currently have 12 different tile shapes, 7 of which have select colors available to purchase online. The shape of tile that you choose not only influences the style of the room but the cost of your overall project. Because each of our tiles are individually hand-cut from our talented Tile Elves rather than a machine, some shapes take longer to make than others. For example, a timeless Subway is much more affordable than elaborate Bubbles. Another consideration with shape is the amount of grout that will show on the final project. For example, our Hexagon shape will have smaller grout lines than Penny Rounds

3. Color

We offer over 100 glaze colors for you to choose from, all of which boast a unique variation and finish. Whether you choose bright and bold or traditional and subdued, our tile projects tend to become a focal point for the room. Because your tile is bound to stay in tip-top condition for years to come, take special time to consider what color(s) you want as an anchor point for your room.

4. Size

Size matters when it comes your tile choice. While our larger sizes will stand out more visually, our smaller sizes will help maximize a tight space. The size of the tile also effects the cost, our larger tile is cheaper per square foot. The final consideration with size is glaze variation. If you choose a high variation glaze on a large tile size there will be more room to see the brush strokes or color burst detail of the glaze. If you choose a small tile size there will be more contrasting color depths, but they will be visually blended.
