Dark & Moody Handmade Tiling Ideas

We love light and bright subway tile just as much as the next person, but it’s time to give dark, moody designs some well-deserved appreciation. Here, we’ll walk through some of our favorite projects that feature dark tile – from a sumptuous oyster bar in New York City to a mid-century modern basement lounge.

1. Lower Level Lounge

Lounges and dark tile always make for a heady brew. When adding to this lower level lounge, Construction2Style pulled from a bold palette, using denim blues, navy and gray for the wet bar backsplash. The subway tile was arranged in a herringbone pattern, then topped off with brass fixtures to complete the mid-century modern vibe.

2. All Black Home Bar

This at-home bar took a more dramatic approach, with all-black subway tile lining the walls. The inky-black tile feels bold and provocative, while the lighter grout highlights the herringbone pattern.

3. Whiskey Wet Bar

Whiskey lovers, this one's for you: Featuring amber and espresso browns, the color palette used for this wet bar evokes the look of your favorite barrel-aged bottle of joy. The earth-toned hues are complemented by natural wood shelving, which displays glassware and gin bottles like pieces of art.

4. NYC Oyster Bar

Black tile makes a striking appearance at the Roxy Hotel in New York City. It’s only fitting that Moroccan fish scale tile is used for the hotel’s oyster bar, playing into the restaurant’s marine theme. Black onyx tile updates the design to be more sophisticated and luxe, while combining satin and glossy glazes creates subtle texture.

5. Moody Ombre Kitchenette

The design team at STR8 Modern also leaned into dark tile to create a moody kitchen space. Two-toned black glazes are paired with a steel gray accent hue to add personality, with the combination of matte and glossy glazes providing added texture. The kitchen’s modern look is rounded out with luxe, matte black fixtures and sleek cabinetry while a Smeg fridge adds retro flair.

6. Dark River Design

Incorporating an ombré river is one way to add more depth into a dark and moody backsplash. Your “river” can play with colors, patterns and glazes. This kitchen used striking black tile to make a modern statement but incorporated an ombré “river” composed of white, steel and silvery gray tile to make it more unique. Likewise, this light gray added an ombré river along the kitchen range using our Medium Diamonds in a range of steely grays, silvers and blacks.

7. Minimalist Moroccan Fish Scales

Using a darker color palette for your kitchen backsplash might seem dramatic, even a bit risky, but it has the potential to be cozy too. This kitchen backsplash uses Moroccan fish scale tile in a smooth, satin black glaze. The tile, the glaze and the kitchen’s minimalist aesthetic work in tandem to make the kitchen feel calm, warm and inviting.
