Creating Your One-of-a-Kind Custom Tile Project

Creating Your One-of-a-Kind Custom Tile Project

Tile is art with function. While you may start your project needing a backsplash that's easy to clean, or floor tile with a durable surface, it can end up being so much more. Tile can provide immense beauty to your space, and it can also be a great way to bring your personality into your home.

Mercury Mosaics was founded over 15 years ago by our fun and fearless leader, Mercedes Austin. She started this company making one-of-a-kind, custom mosaic pieces for clients. While we've expanded our inventory to offer more standard tile options today, we still love to create custom tile projects with our clients. If you're curious about how to dream up a one-of-a-kind project of your own, here are 6 of our favorite ways to get started. Continue reading to see how you can go about creating your one-of-a-kind custom made tile project.

1. Mix Shapes

One of our favorite ways to create an eye-catching project is by mixing tile shapes. (Browse our shapes.) This is a way to get that intricate mosaic look while keeping it modern. From simple surface contrasts to custom cutting, there are a variety of looks you're sure to love with this style. Find your favorite by reading our blog "7 Modern Ways to Mix and Match Tile Shapes"

2. Organic Edging

The edging of your tile makes a huge impact on the overall style and appearance of your project. While Bullnose Tile, Schluter, and Pencil Liners are the most common types of finishing pieces, no finishing concept is quite as creative as organic edging. For this style we simply allow the tile shape to create the final edge, and edge-glaze the exposed tile to created a finished look. This technique can work with a variety of shapes like Diamonds, Hexagons, and Bubbles. 3. Say Something

Make a statement by saying something unique in your space! We love tile lettering, and can even offer it in a clay body that is safe and durable for outdoor use. From your front entry floor, an address sign, to a statement wall - this is a creative way to say something unique and personal to you in an impactful medium such as tile. 4. Go Ombre

Going ombre is a fun way to blend a palette of glazes into one statement piece. This technique not only ties an entire space of colors together, but it is also very easy for our team to create! We've been loving ombre for years now, and it's a tile trend that isn't going anywhere. 5. Make a Pattern

Our current design obsession is creating repeating patterns within our tile. We've been able to standardize some of these concepts for a custom look without a custom budget on our "Signature Patterns" page. The one below is a bit more intricate, consisting of small triangles and squares that are oriented in a deliberate pattern that only reveals itself once laid out across many sheets of tile. We think it's a beautiful  and more durable alternative to trendy cement floors. Have a pattern you love? Just send it to our sales team and we'll turn it into a tile pattern just for you!

6. Add a Ceramic Wall Planter

Few things in tile are quite as adorable as our ceramic wall planters, if we do say so ourselves. It's such a cool way to enliven a space with greenery or fresh blossoms. Our planters are simple accent that you can add to a custom or standard project.  See a few of our favorite project ideas with these cuties on our blog "Ceramic Wall Planters to Add to Your Tile"
