Characterized by bright spaces that are cozy, minimal, clean, and filled with natural elements - it's perfect for snuggling up inside. Of course, tile can help make or break this look, and we have some beautiful examples from our customers of tile elevating the Scandinavian Modern aesthetic in their spaces. So pour a cup of tea and get ready to fall in love with these hygge-filled tile projects. Continue reading to see 7 ways to rock Scandinavian modern style with tile backsplashes.

1. Bright White - Subway Tile Kitchen Backsplash

To get through the long winters, Scandinavians have utilized bright white as a key element in Scandinavian Modern style. We think this kitchen does a great job creating that airy ambiance, not only with the bright white coloring, but with the use of these teeny tiny Subway Tiles. By using smaller tile, in this case 1"x3",  you can create the impression that the space is larger than life. We also adore the clean lines of the stacked layout and soft ombre as the tile transitions from light grey to white.

2. Subtle Ombre - Herringbone Bathroom Backsplash

Natural light is a big factor in Scandinavian Modern design, and this bathroom is overflowing with it. When possible, we like having a big window adjacent to our tile to allow the glossy glaze to shine in a few areas to brighten up the room even more. Herringbone design works wonderfully with this style, and is a timeless tile choice.

3. Contrasting Grout - Diamond Shower Tile

A key element to Scandinavian Modern Design is clean lines and geometric shapes. For this reason Diamonds work wonderfully in amplifying this style. Try taking it to the next level by using contrasting grout color. This gives a modern look and helps your tile pop while staying neutral.

4. Organic Variation - Diamond Kitchen Backsplash

White tile doesn't need to be boring! For this project we utilized four glaze colors and laid them out in an organic vignette pattern to create variation and depth in an otherwise simple layout. It's the little things that make the biggest impact sometimes, don't you think?

5. Pops of Color - Statement Kitchen Backsplash

Up to this point on our list, every installation has been white, which is classic of Scandinavian Modern Design. Despite that, there are ways to incorporate color...for the next three installs we added some fun hues to this look. The kitchen backsplash below uses a glaze combination with a white base and pops of primary blues and yellows throughout, reminiscent of a Swedish flag. By only using accent pops of color, this palette allows primary colors to show off their sophisticated side.

This color combination has become a favorite at Mercury Mosaics, and it all stems back to our installation at Bachelor Farmer Cafe. Learn more about that project and other unique coffee shop tile projects we've done with our blog "Coffee Shops with Swoon-Worthy Tile"

6. Bold Color - Hexagon Kitchen Backsplash

If you're a lover of bold glaze colors you can still achieve this look! By keeping the rest of the space bright white and having natural elements like this wood floor, you still get the feel of the minimal Scandinavian Modern look. Plus, when you keep the rest of the space minimal and have a bold color, it makes your tile pop even more - making a big statement without being too busy.

7. Dark Color - Green Herringbone Laundry Backsplash

Yes, dark colors work with this style too! There are two great ways to include color in a Scandinavian Modern space: either use accent pops like our last two examples, or use natural hues like this one. This deep green glaze is aptly named Everglades and it adds to the natural coloring and texture of this space just perfectly.

One of our favorite ways to make the most of your backsplash is by using open shelving. See more creative ways to mix open shelving with tile by reading our blog "Tile + Open Shelving: A Match Made in Heaven"
