5 Trendy Stacked Tile Projects We Love

We love subway tile for so many reason and one of those reasons being its versatility. In addition to the beloved staggered or herringbone patterns, we are seeing a lot of interest in stacked subway tile! By simply stacking these shapes horizontally or vertically you can bring a whole new vibrant energy to your space. Continue reading to see 5 trendy stacked subway tile projects we adore, plus some pro tips on installing this trendy layout...

1. Perfect Pop of Color

Pops of color can say so much about a home and the personality behind it. Lena Dunham, an award winning writer, director, actress, and producer, recently moved into her forever home, where our handmade tile adorns the kitchen! These dreamy teal squares are full of character, glossy goodness, and gorgeous variation. The stacked Subway tiles create a clean and uniform look that fits this colorful home perfectly.

2. Mid-Century Modern

Mid-Century Modern design is known for it's clean and sleek lines, so it only makes sense that stacked tile was the choice for this kitchen. We love this project because the bold color choices work so well together. These stacked 2"x6" Subway Tiles in a glossy warm brown brings so much richness and energy to this MCM space.

3. Scandinavian Ombre

We are loving the movement towards smaller tile shapes and these tiny rectangles are just too cute! Aside from being cute, they are also helpful in making small spaces appear larger. It plays as an optical illusion: the more tiles your eye sees the more surface area it attributes to the space. Small subway tile is a more delicate approach to stacked tile because the grout lines are closer together, seeming less harsh and more blended.

This project is a personal favorite because it shows how stacked squares can show off all the beautiful variation in our handmade tile. This space makes for the perfect lake home with it's fresh and clean yet trendy palette.

The Nitty Gritty

Handmade tile comes with many perfect imperfections. We cut, glaze, and fire every tile by hand so it only makes sense that each one is slightly different from the next. You’ll get brush strokes, variation in color, slight differences in size, and a whole lot of added character to your space. These nuances to handmade, artisan tile are what make them special. So when you are installing our field tile in a stacked layout, here’s what to keep in mind:

  1. Unpack your tile into manageable sized stacks and turn them upright to see the length of each tile
  2. Remove tiles that appear to be the same length and make piles for each size
  3. Measure each organized stack and mark down the length
  4. When staging your rows for install, use only tiles that are the same length for each stacked row
