Being Green
What we do in the movement of all things green at Mercury Mosaics in Minneapolis. As long as we’ve been in business, we have prided ourselves on the idea of reusing materials...
From the start, we make our tiles from clay that comes from the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys. The clay that we use to create our lovely tiles is made of natural materials that have been ground and left by glaciers traveling and settling into the river valley for 1,000's of years. As we make tiles, we reuse the extra parts of the clay and rework and knead it into new bags of clay to make more tiles later on. These extra pieces from kitchens and bathrooms make their way into the studio of another up and coming mosaic artist whose has been in search of new materials.
The containers that all of our glazes come in are recycable. Our clay boxes become the boxes we ship out of. In fact every box and all packing materials that come into the studio leave padding or boxing some other shipment, so these materials are always cycling through. Lastly, one of the coolest things we have reused are our very own work tables. Our tables were once bowling lanes! This is just how we normally operate, and a glance at how handmade tile is great for the earth!
